Cynthiana - New Booster Pump Station
Project Description:
The City of Cynthiana, KY plans to construct a new booster pump station adjacent to the existing 1 million gallon standpipe located near Harrison County High School. The plan is to create a new pressure zone to serve the east side of the City. Water from the existing standpipe will be used to feed only the new pressure zone, which will improve the turnover of the tank and will reduce water age. The proposed booster pump station will be designed to increase pressure to residential and institutional customers by a minimum of 25 PSI during static conditions. In the event that the pump station is temporarily out of service, a valve will be opened and the existing tank will be used to supply water to the area by using the tank head (existing conditions). The proposed pump station will also include a large pump that will provide fire flows for the Harrison Memorial Hospital (HMH) and adjacent areas.
Need For Project:
Briefly describe how this project promotes public health or achieves and/or maintains compliance with the Clean Water Act or Safe Drinking Water Act:
The City is currently using a 1 million gallon, 114 foot tall water storage standpipe to provide water to the east side of the City and the HMH. When the water level in the tank drops more than 20 feet, the east side static pressure falls below 30 PSI. The inability to use the lower portion of the tank causes water quality problems due to water age and inadequate turnover. A booster pump station is needed to create a new pressure zone and increase pressure on the east side by approximately 25 PSI. This will allow the water in the tank to turn over which will improve water circulation and quality. In addition, the City needs to have the ability to supply fire flows to the HMH and adjacent areas on the east side.

Construct a new elevated welded steel storage tank at the existing High School site at a height of 175 feet to the overflow and demolish the existing standpipe. A small booster pump station would also be needed to fill the proposed tank. This alternative was not selected due to cost to construct an elevated tank.
Alternate B:
Construct a new elevated welded steel storage tank at a site adjacent to the HMH. Due to the site being at a higher elevation, the height of this tank would be 130 feet to the overflow. A small booster pump station would also be required to fill the proposed tank. This alternative was not selected due to the cost to construct an elevated tank.
