Project Title:
Sympsons Lake Water Resiliency

Project Description:
The proposed project would provide resiliency to Bardstown’s Water Supply during dam repairs and possible lowering of Sympsons Lake. The project includes upgraded controls, electrical service, telemetry, and variable frequency drives at the Beechfork River intake to improve pump efficiencies. A direct feed from the river settling basins (1850 ft of 14” HDPE pipe) to the treatment plant intake will also be installed to reduce water loss. The project also includes emergency floating intakes in the event the lake drops to levels below the current intake elevation. Other minor improvements and costs include additional purchased water, existing lake intake improvements to provide additional flexibility, and additional pumping costs.

Need For Project: Briefly describe how this project promotes public health or achieves and/or maintains compliance with the Clean Water Act or Safe Drinking Water Act:
KYTC has identified seepage in the Sympsons Lake Dam. Agencies and consultants working on the project have requested the lake be lowered approximately 5-7 ft while temporary repairs are made to reduce the risk of additional seepage. It is currently unknown when lake levels will be able to return to normal pool elevation and possible drought conditions could prevent the return of normal pool elevation for extended periods. This project would implement all possible resiliencies to continue to supply water to the Bardstown community and surrounding communities. Interconnect projects that would allow Bardstown to have complete resilient water supply are not expected to be completed until end of 2026.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:
