Project Title:
Salem - Water Main Replacement Project

Project Description:
The City of Salem, Kentucky is experiencing water line failures in its water distribution system in certain areas due to corrosion of their cast iron pipe which has been in service over 60 years. The City is requesting funds through the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority for Phase I of this replacement project. Phase I of Salem’s water main replacement program concentrates on the western supply route with Salem’s connection with the Crittenden-Livingston County Water District. Work is scheduled to replace 5,500 LF of 6" PVC lines on West Lyon St, East Lyon St, Maple St, Court St, Sunrise Dr, KY-723, and West Main St. In addition, 24 valves and 6 hydrants will be added. A short portion of this supply line has already been replaced and this project is to complete Phase I for the City.

Need For Project: Briefly describe how this project promotes public health or achieves and/or maintains compliance with the Clean Water Act or Safe Drinking Water Act:
The City of Salem is experiencing failure in portions of their original cast iron lines that are approximately 60 years old. These failures contribute to service outages and contribute to water loss for the City.

The alternative of replacing the existing cast iron with ductile iron was considered. However, upon consideration of the corrosion of the cast iron, the use of PVC pipe is deemed more appropriate for the conditions and PVC can be installed with less capital cost.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:

Energy Efficiency:

Energy efficiency is the use of improved technologies and practices to reduce the energy consumption of water projects, use energy in a more efficient way, and/or produce/utilize renewable energy. Examples include:
