Project Title:
Elkhorn Lake Improvements

Project Description:
This project will improve safety, water quality and recreation at the Elkhorn Lake in Jenkins, KY. The project scope will include the following: 1. Geotechnical investigation to insure the integrity of the the bedrock under the dam. 2. Grouting of the abutments to reduce the leakage through this part of the dam. In case of a drought this will enable more water to be utilized for the treatment plant. 3. Closing one pipe penetration through the dam. Lining the other and placing a valve at the end of it. This will used for the water flow into the plant as well as dewatering of the impoundment. 4. Rehabilitation of the concrete face, constructed in 1912-13, as well as the principal spillway system. All of this concrete work is spalling and cracked. 5. Dredging of the impoundment. This will increase water supply volume, as well as eliminate the water lily problem. Elimination of the water lily's will increase the water quality of the water in the impoundment. The sediment deposited in the lake is from surface mine activity as well as road construction. 6. Rehabilitation of the stream both above and below the impoundment. This will enhance water quality in these reaches of the stream. 7. Construction of the walking trail and landscaping around the lake to aid in erosion control.

Needed to ensure safety of the population downstream of the dam. Improve water quality and volume of the city’s raw water source.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:
