Downtown Water Rehab Project
Project Description:
This project proposes to rehab the downtown area of the City of Louisa's water distribution system to reduce water loss. The existing lines require continuous repairs and maintenance. This will improve the City's potable water service and distribution operations. This project includes replacement of approximately 6,600 LF of existing 2 inch and 6 inch cast iron water main with 6 inch PVC water main along Boone Street, Church Street, Lackey Avenue, Main Street, Pike Street, Pocahontas Street, Rice Street, and Sycamore Street. The line replacements and abandonment on each road are detailed below: Boone Street - Replace existing 6 inch cast iron line with 6 inch PVC line. (Approximately 533 LF) Church Street - Replace existing 6 inch cast iron line with 6 inch PVC line. (Approximately 360 LF) Lackey Avenue - Replace existing 6 inch cast iron line with 6 inch PVC line. (Approximately 2,295 LF) Main Street - Replace existing 6 inch cast iron line with 6 inch PVC line. (Approximately 218 LF) Pike Street - Replace existing 6 inch cast iron line with 6 inch PVC line. (Approximately 507 LF) Pocahontas Street - Replace existing 6 inch cast iron lines with 6 inch PVC lines. (Approximately 880 LF) Rice Street - Abandon existing 2 inch cast iron line and install new 6 inch PVC line. (Approximately 736 LF) Rice Street - Abandon existing 6 inch cast iron line and install new 6 inch PVC line. (Approximately 673 LF) Sycamore Street - Replace existing 6 inch cast iron line with 6 inch PVC line. (Approximately 398 LF)
Need For Project:
Briefly describe how this project promotes public health or achieves and/or maintains compliance with the Clean Water Act or Safe Drinking Water Act:
This project will reduce water loss in the system by replacing problem lines. The existing waterlines are some of the oldest in the City’s system, constructed in the 1930s when the first water plant was built. Over time, corrosion has caused the lines to become tuberculated which causes reduced pressure and water quality degradation. The City has also been battling frequent leaks and breaks due to the age of the waterline. This rehabilitation project will reduce water loss for the City and allow for improved service and reliability to the residents and businesses within the project area.
