Project Title:
Ashland: Enlarge Sewer Treatment Plant to Eliminate Overflows

Project Description:
The purpose of this project is for wet weather attenuation and renewal of aged assets. Work at the WWTP will include 1) new headworks, 2) new grit removal and screening, 3) three new clarifiers with the existing clarifiers being re-purposed to provide storage, and 4) a new outfall. The disinfection process will be upgraded as will the Scada and Telemetry systems. The treatment plant will be upgraded for future nutrient removal and new hauled waste received and sludge dewatering equipment will be provided. Outside the WWTP, the force main from the 10th street pump station will be rerouted away from the 26th St pump station where it is now connected and will feed directly into the treatment plant. This project is required as a part of the city's approved Long Term Control Plan and Consent Judgement.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. On a regional scale, green infrastructure is the preservation and restoration of natural landscape features, such as forests, floodplains, and wetlands, coupled with policies such as infill and redevelopment that reduce overall imperviousness in a watershed. On the local scale, green infrastructure consists of site and neighborhood-specific practices, such as:

Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:

Energy efficiency is the use of improved technologies and practices to reduce the energy consumption of water projects, use energy in a more efficient way, and/or produce/utilize renewable energy. Examples include:

This project will refit much of the interior of the Ashland Wastewater Treatment facility to make it more energy efficient in as many ways as feasible. The current plant has had only minor adjustments to address energy use.
