Project Title:
South Central West Green Infrastructure Focus Area

Project Description:
The South Central West Green infrastructure focus area is a green infrastructure focus area composed of several bmps on several properties. The primary focus area lies between Southern Parkway, Berry Blvd, S. 6th st and Manslick Rd. Bmps will be selected based on specific site conditions and property owner issues and May include rain gardens, cisterns, dry wells, green streets, pervious pavers, green alleys, green roofs, green cross-walks, bioswales, tree wells, urban reforestation, bio-filtration, and other infiltration bmps. This project also serves to assist MSD in implementing its broader nonpoint source pollution program. This focus area is divided between the combined sewer service area and the ms4 area, and serves as a green infrastructure demonstration / proof of concept for the business community and development and redevelopment community stakeholders. Project efforts will be focused initially on CSO discharge reduction, but the western portion of the focus area provides an opportunity for expansion of green infrastructure techniques in the MS4 service area boundaries. The components of this focus area projects also serve to assist MSD with the implementation of municipal stormwater management and provide environmental benefit to the entire system. Drainage from these projects will reduce nonpoint source pollution by capturing and infiltrating stormwater runoff. Green infrastructure techniques implemented in the focus area will assist in removal of nutrients and coliform bacteria that are a prevalent concern in Louisville’s urban areas. The projects are anticipated to enhance the quality of life in the community and reduce costs for stormwater management. for phase I of this project, green alleys will be constructed up to $1,500,000. for phase II additional alleys will be selected for construction accounting for the remaining $1,500,000 of the project cost. Since MSD will be designing all of the green alleys in house, all funds will be used for construction.

Drainage from these projects will reduce nonpoint source pollution by capturing and infiltrating stormwater runoff. Green infrastructure techniques implemented in the focus area will assist in removal of nutrients and coliform bacteria that are a prevalent concern in Louisville’s urban areas. The projects are anticipated to enhance the quality of life in the community and reduce costs for stormwater management.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. On a regional scale, green infrastructure is the preservation and restoration of natural landscape features, such as forests, floodplains, and wetlands, coupled with policies such as infill and redevelopment that reduce overall imperviousness in a watershed. On the local scale, green infrastructure consists of site and neighborhood-specific practices, such as:

Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:

Energy efficiency is the use of improved technologies and practices to reduce the energy consumption of water projects, use energy in a more efficient way, and/or produce/utilize renewable energy. Examples include:
