Project Title:
Green Infrastructure Flood Control Basins Retrofit for Water Qua

Project Description:
Developed Urban area. Funds for this project will be used for site selection, planning, conceptual design, design, construction, and selected post-construction monitoring. Selecting and implementing the proposed basin green retrofit efforts will involve several planning considerations including: public-private partnerships, easements, land acquisition, permitting and other site-specific constraints. Implementing these green infrastructure projects is necessary for msd’s compliance with its proposed municipal separate storm sewer system (ms4) (aka. Stormwater Quality) permit and assists MSD in implementing its boarder nonpoint source pollution program. Drainage from these projects will reduce nonpoint source pollution by capturing and infiltrating stormwater runoff with the goal of attenuating or infiltrating the first flush. Green infrastructure techniques implemented in this project area will assist in removal of sediment and other pollutants that are a prevalent concern in louisville’s Urban areas. Specifically the Northern ditch watershed that is located in the flood control basin focus area, includes pollutants on the 2008 305 (b) list including ammonia (unionized), nutrient/eutrophication biological I/I. For phase I of this project, green alleys will be constructed up to $1,200,000. for phase II additional alleys will be selected for construction accounting for the remaining $1,200,000 of the project cost. Since MSD will be designing all of the green alleys in house, all funds will be used for construction.

Pre-treatment is an alternative. Options include forebays, artificial wetlands and bioswales, which improve water Quality by removing sediment and floatables and preventing erosion at pond inlet.

Alternate B:

Littoral zone establishment within regional detention basins is an alternative that would promote biodiversity in the shallow (less than 15 foot depth) shelf along a basin’s shoreline.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. On a regional scale, green infrastructure is the preservation and restoration of natural landscape features, such as forests, floodplains, and wetlands, coupled with policies such as infill and redevelopment that reduce overall imperviousness in a watershed. On the local scale, green infrastructure consists of site and neighborhood-specific practices, such as:

Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:

Energy efficiency is the use of improved technologies and practices to reduce the energy consumption of water projects, use energy in a more efficient way, and/or produce/utilize renewable energy. Examples include:
