Project Title:
Nightingale I & I Elimination Project

Project Description:
Areas of sanitary sewer upstream of the Nightingale Pump Station were micro-monitored in 2015 which identified over 40,000 LF of 6 inch to 16 inch sewer lines that are in need of rehabilitation. The rehabilitation of these lines will reduce infiltration and inflow (I/I) impacting the need for treatment of groundwater due to the I/I in the area. The elimination of wet weather conditions within the Nightingale project limits includes: • Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) lining of nearly 47,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer ranging in size from 6 inches to 16 inches in diameter • Installation of more than 1,000 top hats on the laterals of the CIPP lines • Epoxy Coating of the interior of 55 manholes • Removal of intruding taps and inspections on more than 60,000 linear feet of sewer • Additional miscellaneous improvements such as installation of chimney seals, point repairs, manhole frame adjustment.

Need For Project: Briefly describe how this project promotes public health or achieves and/or maintains compliance with the Clean Water Act or Safe Drinking Water Act:
Newer sanitary sewer lines accept a limited amount of I/I into the system. Allowing for more cost effective system improvements by reducing capacity needs for treatment of flows that are not influenced by wet weather conditions.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. On a regional scale, green infrastructure is the preservation and restoration of natural landscape features, such as forests, floodplains, and wetlands, coupled with policies such as infill and redevelopment that reduce overall imperviousness in a watershed. On the local scale, green infrastructure consists of site and neighborhood-specific practices, such as:

Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:

Energy efficiency is the use of improved technologies and practices to reduce the energy consumption of water projects, use energy in a more efficient way, and/or produce/utilize renewable energy. Examples include:

Louisville MSD has completed an extensive analysis of the flood protection from the Ohio River, wastewater facilities , and storm water systems that has lead to the 20-year comprehensive Critical Repair & Reinvestment Plan that addresses the challenges posed by Louisville’s aging infrastructure.
