Project Title:
NWWTP Biosolids Reduction Upgrade - Screw Press Installation

Project Description:
This project involves the installation of a Screw Press to replace the outdated Belt Filter Presses at HWU's North Wastewater Treatment Plant (NWWTP) to reduce overall sludge volume. The existing Belt Filter Presses are near the end of their useful life and require refurbishment or replacement. HWU has investigated new technology to replace the existing belt filter presses and has performed field testing of various sludge drying equipment. It was determined that Screw Presses were the best solution to replace the belt filter presses with a projection of 5-10% reduction in overall sludge volume at the NWWTP. Upgrading to modern, efficient technologies will enhance overall performance at the NWWTP and reduce operational costs for HWU and its ratepayers. While the upfront capital cost may be higher, the potential for ongoing operational savings and increased efficiency makes it a cost-effective choice over the life of the equipment.

Need For Project: Briefly describe how this project promotes public health or achieves and/or maintains compliance with the Clean Water Act or Safe Drinking Water Act:
HWU research has shown that upgrading to Screw Press technology is necessary and will lead to cost savings and overall improved performance at the NWWTP due to the following: 1. Efficiency - Higher Dry Solids Content: Screw presses are more efficient in removing water from sludge, resulting in a higher dry solids content in the cake, meaning less water needs to be transported and disposed, reducing overall treatment costs. Faster Processing - Screw presses have a higher throughput and dewater sludge more quickly than belt filter presses, which leads to increased efficiency. 2. Space Efficiency - Compact Design: Screw presses are more compact than belt filter presses, requiring less space for installation, optimizing the NWWTP layout and removing renovation needs. 3. Energy Efficiency - Lower Consumption: Screw presses have lower energy consumption than belt filter presses, contributing to reduced operational costs and environmental impact. 4. Maintenance and Operating Costs - Simplified Maintenance: Screw presses have a simpler design with fewer moving parts - easier maintenance and reduced downtime. Belt filter presses require more frequent and complex maintenance. 5. Odor - Improved Control: Screw presses help minimize odors by reducing the time sludge spends in the dewatering process, reducing treatment costs and promoting public health. 6. Automation and Control - Advanced Automation: Screw presses come with advanced automation and control systems, allowing for more precise management of the dewatering process and reduce human error, leading to better consistency and quality of the dewatered sludge. 7. Handling of Various Sludge Types - Versatility: Screw presses are known for their versatility in handling various types of sludge, including sludges with high oil and fat content, critical at the NWWTP. 8. Improved Cake Handling - Easier Disposal: The drier and more compact cakes produced by screw presses are easier to handle and dispose than those from belt filter presses.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. On a regional scale, green infrastructure is the preservation and restoration of natural landscape features, such as forests, floodplains, and wetlands, coupled with policies such as infill and redevelopment that reduce overall imperviousness in a watershed. Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:

Henderson Water Utility has maintained a Capital Improvement and Strategic Plan since 2014 that is a cost effective and environmentally sound path to accommodate existing needs and project growth over a rolling 10-year time frame. This plan includes an asset inventory, strategic plan, and capital improvements plan that lay the groundwork for increasing capacity to serve growth areas while maintaining the systems and facilities they currently serve, balancing risk with the money they have available.
