Project Title:
Bardstown - Maple Hill Water Line Replacement

Project Description:
The proposed project would include the replacement of approx. 16,045’ of Water Main of which at least 8,776’ is Galvanized or Cast Iron and the material is unknown (presumed to be Cast or Galvanized) for a further 1915’. These Water mains serve the Maple Hill neighborhood on the West side of the City of Bardstown where the mean average build date for homes is 1951. Most streets in this area are served by 2” cast iron Water Mains running on both sides of the street which would be replaced with approx. 7,192’ of 6” or 8” main on one side of the road along with 882’ of 10” transmission main and 200’ of smaller service lines, that will improve flow, water quality, and provide fire protection. The project would also replace approx. 190 Water service lines from the main to the customer Water meters and inventory the material type on the customer side of the meter. 14 Hydrants along existing Cast Iron or undersized Water Mains would be replaced and a further 6 new hydrants added to improve fire protection and allow for more effective flushing of new and existing water mains.

Need For Project: Briefly describe how this project promotes public health or achieves and/or maintains compliance with the Clean Water Act or Safe Drinking Water Act:
The City has identified this area as having a potential for Lead Service Lines given the age of the residences and presence of Galvanized Iron Water Mains. The Water Mains in this area date back to at least 1950 when lead was still used for connections and in services. This project will improve water quality by eliminating potential lead lines, as well as removing lead contamination potential by replacing downstream galvanized pipes that can trap lead from upstream sources, as well as meet inventory requirement for the lead service rule. These areas will also see improved fire protection.

Green Infrastructure:

Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:
