Project Title:
GCEC Headworks Equipment Upgrade

Project Description:
Replacement of the aging mechanical bar screen and grit removal system equipment as well as the installation of a new mechanical screen for flows pumped to the oxidation ditch. The GCEC WWTP suffers from a large volume of trash and grit in their system; to protect the downstream equipment, new mechanical screens and grit removal equipment are required. Improvements to the existing GCEC WWTP is necessary to replace the existing WWTP aging headworks mechanical screen and grit removal equipment. The existing GCEC WWTP headworks mechanical screen and grit removal system were installed almost 30 years ago as a part of a major plant expansion (when lagoons were added) The GCEC WWTP is a critical regional sewage treatment plant that serves the Cities of Flatwoods, Russell, and Raceland. The plant also serves the Boyd/Greenup County Sanitation Districts 1 & 2. One (1) each replacement bar screen and grit removal system equipment are needed here. In addition GCEC needs a second mechanical screen to be installed in the lagoon effluent return at the oxidation ditch inlet part of the plant. This is necessary to screen effluent flow from the lagoon that is returned to the oxidation ditch for final aeration. The existing equipment has been repaired numerous times and has reached the end of it's useful service life.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. On a regional scale, green infrastructure is the preservation and restoration of natural landscape features, such as forests, floodplains, and wetlands, coupled with policies such as infill and redevelopment that reduce overall imperviousness in a watershed. Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:
