Project Title:
City of Irvine Sanitary Sewer Improvements

Project Description:
This project will provide upgrades to three various locations of the existing collecting system. Location 1, Whispering Woods Sewer Upgrades, includes the elimination of a community 10,000 gallon failing septic system with a new 8-inch gravity sewer. The new gravity sewer will replace approximately 3,600 LF of deteriorating small diameter gravity sewer (4" and 6") and 1,800 LF of deteriorating 8-inch sewer with new 8-inch PVC sewer. Existing septic tank serves 52 residential and one commercial customer. Location 2, Sweet Lick Branch Sewer Replacement, includes the replacement of 8-inch clay tile sewer and brick manholes along the creek with new PVC sewer and precast manholes. The area sees heavy amount of inflow and infiltration. Location 3, KY 52 Road bore, includes the installation of an 8-inch sewer line beneath KY 52 will eliminates 2,000 LF of small diameter sewer. The new bore reroute the flow and bypasses the need to be pump upstream. The remaining small diameter sewer that corrects flow from businesses along KY 52 will be replaced along with the pump station. This project also includes improvements at the Irvine WWTP to recycle and reuse membrane wash down water.

Need For Project: Briefly describe how this project promotes public health or achieves and/or maintains compliance with the Clean Water Act or Safe Drinking Water Act:
The City of Irvine's sewer system infrastructure was installed over 50 years ago, with limited upgrades since then. Common sewer construction practices at that time such as large septic tanks and small diameter sewers have become a major operation and maintenance issue for the City. The limited capacity resulting from small diameter sewers hinder future development in the area. In addition, the aging pipes and their deteriorating conditions produce heavy amount of inflow and infiltration.

Replace the large septic tank with a pump station and force main instead of gravity sewer. Line the existing sewer system along the Sweet Lick Branch.

Do nothing, and repair/replace the infrastructure as it fails. This option is a reactive approach versus a proactive approach.

Green Infrastructure:

Green stormwater infrastructure includes a wide array of practices at multiple scales that manage wet weather and that maintains and restores natural hydrology by infiltrating, evapotranspiring and harvesting and using stormwater. On a regional scale, green infrastructure is the preservation and restoration of natural landscape features, such as forests, floodplains, and wetlands, coupled with policies such as infill and redevelopment that reduce overall imperviousness in a watershed. Water Efficiency:

The use of improved technologies and practices to deliver equal or better services with less water. Water efficiency encompasses conservation and reuse efforts, as well as water loss reduction and prevention, to protect water resources for the future. Examples include:

IMU plans on replacing all of the plumbing fixtures at their offices to water efficient devices. IMU plans on recycling the filter backwash at their WTP. It is estimated that 2,000,000 gallons per month of filter backwash can be reclaimed, reducing the power consumption from the raw water pumps.

Energy Efficiency:

Energy efficiency is the use of improved technologies and practices to reduce the energy consumption of water projects, use energy in a more efficient way, and/or produce/utilize renewable energy. Examples include:

IMU plans on installing magmeters at 3 of its pump stations. The magmeters will provided extra data in determining where I/I is most prevalent.Energy consumption reduction will occur as a result of recycling filter backwash water.Replacing old, deteriorating small diameter sewer lines with new 8-inch PVC lines will reduce the amount of I/I and subsequently the amount of sewer that must be conveyed and pumped to the WWTP
